Wave 3 of the NESARC used DSM-5 criteria to determine diagnostic status.40 We coded the NESARC data into the following categories for past year (12 months) DSM-5 AUD, TUD, CUD, and OUD diagnoses. Absent: no diagnosis in the past year and no diagnosis prior to the past year. New: diagnosis in the past year but no diagnosis prior to the past year. Remit: no diagnosis in the past year but diagnosis prior to the past year. Ongoing: diagnosis in the past year and diagnosis prior to the past year.
