All respondents were informed in writing about the nature of the survey and uses of the data, its voluntary aspect, and that federal laws protected confidentiality of the survey information. The research protocol, including informed consent procedures, was approved by the Census Bureau review board and the U.S. Office of Management and Budget. The sample for the present study consisted of respondents who participated in both waves, as these were the participants for whom all variables were available.
