Image processing was performed with Adobe Photoshop using only the brightness and contrast commands. The identification of cell types in the lateral wall of the lateral ventricle and SVZ was performed on electron micrographs following well-described ultrastructural criteria by Doetsch et al. (1997). Cells were false colored and were counted manually.
