Further, a low response to alcohol is also predictive of future alcohol problems, independent of any family history of alcoholism (Schuckit, 1994). Thus, we felt that the most prudent approach was to have a true control group and only include FHN women who were light drinkers; if we had included moderate drinkers in the FHN group, we may have obscured any potential ability to detect differences between FHN and FHP women since they would have had a low response to alcohol similar to FHP individuals.
