Parents with a history of mental health problems were more likely to acknowledge difficulty carrying out family responsibilities (43.4 vs. 4.8% for mothers, 55.0 vs. 5.5% for fathers, p < .001 for both) and also more likely to have made a past suicide attempt (38.5 vs. 3.2% for mothers, 36.3 vs. 3.1% for fathers, p < .001 for both). Sixty-one mothers and 40 fathers reported having made a suicide attempt in their lifetime. Race was not associated with parent mental health history (55.3% of Caucasian adolescents had an affected patent compared to 60.9% of non-Caucasians, p = 0.53). Overall, 22.3% of Caucasians and 34.8% of non-Caucasians had at least one biological parent with drug or alcohol problem and criminality (p = 0.09).
