Overall, 197 adolescents had at least one biological parent with a history of mental health problems (56.0%). Baseline functional impairment total scores on the CAFAS were marginally higher (trend) for adolescents who had a biological mother with a history of mental health problems (mean of 108.8 [SD = 33.1] vs. 101.8 [SD = 35.4], p = .06; these total scores were significantly higher for adolescents who had a biological father with a history of mental health problems (107.6 [34.0] vs. 97.3 [32.9] for fathers, p = .01). Other indices of psychopathology were not found to differ for adolescents with and without biological parents with histories of mental health problems. Mental health problems among fathers were associated with an increased prevalence of previous multiple attempts among their high-risk adolescents; however, an association in the opposite direction was observed for mothers (Table 1).
