The same risk allele of SNP rs17696736 in the NAA25 gene has previously been associated with type 1 diabetes in a large genome-wide association study.27 Other SNPs in this 12q24 region have also been implicated in several of related phenotypes including microcirculation in vivo, platelet count, and blood pressure.28, 29, 30 None of the other three associations near to genome-wide significance have previously been associated with cardiovascular or neurological disease.
