Text

Table 4 details alcohol problems and treatment among the 450 interviewees who drank at any point within the past 5 years (Figure 1). Overall, 63% endorsed at least one alcohol dependence symptom/blackout, 23% endorsed at least one alcohol withdrawal symptom, and 19% endorsed at least one alcohol-related medical condition. Endorsement rates of alcohol-related problems did not significantly differ by age group (FDR-adjusted p > 0.38). Relative to the 50 – 54 year old interviewees, odds ratios [and 95% confidence intervals] of experiencing any alcohol related problems for 55 – 59, 60 – 64, and 65+ were 0.88 [0.49, 1.58], 0.44 [0.24, 0.79], and 1.06 [0.61, 1.83], respectively. The proportions of subjects who reported specific alcohol-related medical conditions were too small to obtain statistically meaningful results, except for memory impairment, which was non-significant for age group (FDR-adjusted p = 0.46). Finally, only 32% received any treatment for alcohol problems within the previous 5 years, with no differences observed for age group (FDR-adjusted p > 0.58). Relative to the 50 – 54 year old subjects, odds ratios [and 95% confidence intervals] of
