Trained research assistants later coded the task using the DVD recording of the lab session. A qualitative score (between 1 and 6) was given based on whether the child touched the coloring materials before the experimenter re-entered the room: a 6 was given if the child did not touch the box or paper for the full two minutes (39%); a 5 was given if the child touched only the paper (10%); a 4 was given if the child touched the box (35%); a 3 was given if the child lifted the box (8%); a 2 was given if the child opened the box (4%); and a 1 was given if the child began coloring with the markers (4%). Twenty-two children were not administered this task because they did not participate in the 3-year lab visit; data for 17 children were voided due to insufficient delay time (because of changes in the task protocol). Reliability coding for this task was accomplished on 28% of the sample; the ICC was found to be within acceptable range (.92).
