At the 3-year laboratory visit, children completed a modified delayed gratification task (Marker Delay; Calkins, 1997). The experimenter asked the child if he/she would like to color; presented the child with a box of crayons and a sheet of paper; told the child that she had to leave the room for a moment; and not to touch the coloring materials until she returned. The child was left alone for 2 minutes.
