Although the above predictions are stated in terms of cognitive changes, the same predictions may apply to changes in brain structure. For example, in addition to the MRI findings mentioned earlier, Pfefferbaum and colleagues (1992) found that older alcoholics exhibited more tissue loss than younger alcoholics, which suggests that older alcoholics may be particularly susceptible to alcohol’s effects. These findings support the increased vulnerability version of the premature aging hypothesis.
