Participants were informed of their group assignment (treatment vs. control) after their first laboratory (baseline) session. Participants who were randomly assigned to the treatment condition (n = 69) were required to set a quit date and received a guideline based standardized smoking cessation intervention, used in our previous studies (Cinciripini, McClure, Tsoh, Wetter, & Cinciripini, 2000), and met with a doctorate-level smoking cessation counselor for 30 min at the end of each laboratory session. Participants in the treatment group who were unable to achieve or maintain abstinence at the end of the study were offered a free 10-week supply of nicotine patches. Participants in the control group (n = 46) were offered self-help materials based on the counseling program described above and a free 10-week supply of nicotine patches at the end of the last laboratory session.
