Except for the FTND, these questionnaires were also administered at the beginning of each of the four laboratory sessions. The first (baseline) laboratory session occurred 4 or 5 days before a participant's scheduled quit date. The second, third, and fourth laboratory sessions occurred 1–2, 3–5, and 10–14 days postcessation, respectively. To ensure similar conditions of nondeprivation, we had participants smoke one cigarette before viewing the affective slides at their first laboratory session. All participants also were asked to limit their intake of caffeinated beverages to no more than 2 cups before 8 a.m. on the day of each laboratory session.
