Neurons of the PNS segregated molecularly from the CNS and formed distinct sensory, sympathetic, and enteric subdivisions (Figures 1C and S4). Within the peripheral sensory neurons (of the dorsal root ganglia), cell types were divided into three main branches: peptidergic (eight types), non-peptidergic (six types), and neurofilament (three types), which suggests refinements to previous classifications (Li et al., 2016, Usoskin et al., 2015) (Figure S4 and Table S2).
