In this study, we have used a novel human glial-chimeric mouse brain to ask whether the structural complexity and unique functional properties of human astrocytes influence activity-dependent plasticity in an otherwise stable neural network. In particular, we have tested the hypothesis that human astrocytes might enhance synaptic plasticity and learning, relative to their murine counterparts.
