Text

Binge drinking is defined as a pattern of heavy episodic alcohol consumption that brings blood alcohol level to 0.08%. This is roughly equivalent to having 4+ drinks (56g+ of pure alcohol) for females and 5+ drinks (70g+ of pure alcohol) for males in 2 hours. Worldwide, about 11.5% of drinkers have weekly binge drinking occasions (World Health Organization, 2011) while in the U.S., 37.4 million adults (17.1%) reported having about one binge drinking episode per week (Kanny et al., 2018). This is problematic, as binge drinking is associated with academic failure, injuries, serious health problems, risky sexual behaviors, memory blackouts, cognitive deficits (Lees et al., 2019; O’Leary et al., 2019; Weschler et al., 1994), and increased risk for developing Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD; Knight et al., 2002).
