Text

Researchers have argued that the standard binge drinking definition might be too low to identify heavy episodic drinkers, as both adolescents and young adults commonly drink well beyond this threshold (Hingson and White, 2013; Naimi et al., 2010; Patrick et al., 2013; Read et al., 2008; White et al., 2006). Researchers have proposed to examine more severe levels of binge drinking, such as extreme binge drinking, defined as consuming 8+/10+ drinks (112g+/140g+ of pure alcohol) for females/males in 2 hours (Linden- Carmichael et al., 2017; Patrick, 2016; Patrick et al., 2016). Compared to standard bingeing, extreme bingeing is associated with a greater number of alcohol-related consequences and increased risk for developing AUD (Hingson et al., 2017; Linden- Carmichael et al., 2017; Read et al., 2008).
