al., 2009).Marijuana is an illicit substance, and examination of problematic cannabis use as indicated by abuse and dependence symptoms indicates further penetrance of problematic substance use than initiation alone. Problems with cannabis use have been identified as particularly salient among maltreated youth and young adults (Fergusson et al., 2007), and Widom has identified continuing problems with cannabis use among maltreated individuals extending into middle adulthood (Widom et al., 2006). Thus, the current findings suggest that early emerging CAD may presage long term difficulties with substance use problems among maltreated individuals.
