SLC35G1 binds stromal interaction molecule 1, a calcium sensor that communicates the calcium load within the endoplasmic reticulum to store-operated channels in the plasma membrane39 when calcium stores in the endoplasmic reticulum are depleted.40 The SLC35G1–stromal interaction molecule 1 complex likely regulates the activity of the transporters that coordinate cytosolic calcium through modulation of pump activities.40 The third GWS locus, CSMD1 (rs77378271; P = 2.13 × 10−8), is highly expressed in the growth cones of developing central nervous system neurons, where it likely acts as a regulator of complement activation and inflammation.41 Different SNPs in CSMD1 have been associated with SCZ at the GWS level.42 Thus, CSMD1 is the second gene to be implicated in both disorders (after NRG116) and may explain at least part of their shared genetic susceptibility.
