In addition to characterizing the extent of genetic variation in these aging-related candidate genes, our second goal was to establish tagSNP sets that incorporated both genetic information from a reference population, as well as specific variants discovered in our exceptional healthy oldest-old. This combined approach benefits from valuable information generated by the HapMap project [28] as well as incorporating rare alleles, which in aggregate may have major contributions to susceptibility or resistance to disease [29].
