This study used a longitudinal design and applied the multistage model of drug addiction (Koob & Volkow, 2010) to alcohol use to test for potential changes in positive and negative reinforcement associated with alcohol consumption as a function of AD. Our results indicated that positive reinforcement was associated with alcohol consumption regardless of the status of AD. In contrast, negative reinforcement was more salient in relation to alcohol consumption with the presence of AD.
