The etiology of schizophrenia as presently defined is not well understood. While there are clear environmental contributors to disease [4]–[10], it is clear that genetic predisposition is the major determinant of who develops schizophrenia, with heritability estimates as high as 80% [11],[12], placing schizophrenia amongst the most heritable of the common diseases.
