Since layer II/III pyramidal neurons receive different inputs based on branch and distance from the soma, spine density is expected to differ across apical and basilar branches. Thus, Sholl analysis of spine branching and spine distribution in apical, basilar and all branches of neurons in the mPFC were analyzed by separate ANOVAs. Treatment and sex were between measures and Sholl ring (where appropriate) are repeated measures. For spine density (number of spines per micron of dendrite), separate ANOVAs with treatment and sex as between factors were conducted on apical, basilar and all dendrites in the mPFC and on dendrites in the NAC. When spine density differences were detected, spine distribution (spine density/Sholl ring) was analyzed by separate ANOVAs. Soma size was analyzed in the NAC and mPFC by ANOVAs with treatment and sex as between factors. All data presented are collapsed for sex unless indicated.
