STEP-BD was a US national, longitudinal public health initiative designed to examine the effectiveness of treatments and their impact on the course of BD.44, 45 Over a 7-year period, 4361 participants were enrolled across 20 sites and followed for up to 2 years. From the parent STEP-BD study, 2089 individuals were enrolled in a genetic substudy. Mean age was 43 years. Only non-Hispanic Caucasian individuals with European ancestry based on self-reported race and ethnicity information were included. Controls were used from the NIMH (National Institute of Mental Health) Genetics Repository and were MGS controls. This study included 1507 cases with bipolar I and bipolar II disorder and 903 controls.
