Text

Small head size following PEMCS has been consistently reported, indirectly pointing to reduced cranial volume consequent to PEMCS34, 179, 180. Prenatal exposure to nicotine upregulates nicotinic cholinergic receptors within the developing brain, and shortens the proliferative phase of brain development, thereby possibly allowing earlier onset of neuronal differentiation, which may ultimately result in a smaller brain volume172, 189.
