alpha was 0.86 for the drinking index. Our second measure was a lifetime count of DSM-IIIR alcohol abuse and dependence symptoms, ascertained in the course of a structured clinical diagnostic interview (MCTFR clinical assessments are described in more detail in Iacono, et al., 1999) . DSM-IIIR described the most current criteria at the time that assessments were conducted. Both the drinking behavior index and the alcohol abuse and dependence symptom count were log transformed for analysis. Parents were not present when adolescents were questioned about their alcohol use and abuse behaviors.
