Probands were assigned a ‘confident’ diagnosis of DSM-IV bipolar I disorder by each of two trained clinicians. 563 unrelated control individuals of European-American ancestry who failed to display evidence for DSM-IV criteria for major depression, any history of bipolar disorder or any history of psychosis were recruited by a marketing firm.
