We also fit a combined family-level model that simultaneously included all family-level variables that explained ≥1% of the childhood maltreatment–AAD association (ΔR2 ≥1%; father alcohol problems, drug problems, antisocial characteristics, warmth, and mother alcohol problems and warmth). The childhood maltreatment–AAD correlation was significantly reduced from 0.21 to 0.05 (p<0.001). After partialing the effect of all family-level variables, the residual childhood maltreatment–AAD correlation could be forced to zero without a significant worsening of fit (Δχ2=1.90, df=1, p=0.17). This indicates that the family-level variables mediate virtually the entire childhood maltreatment–AAD association.
