Text

There was a moderate and significant correlation between maltreatment and cannabis initiation among EAs (r = 0.32 [95% Confidence Interval 0.27, 0.38]) and AAs (r = 0.19 [0.07, 0.32]). After controlling for age, EAs who experienced childhood maltreatment were at 6.33 greater odds (95% CI=4.55, 8.81) of reporting cannabis initiation before age 15 and at 1.68 greater odds (95% CI=1.33, 2.14) of cannabis initiation at age 15 or older than EAs without a history of maltreatment. Among AAs, maltreatment was associated with 3.93 greater odds (95% CI=1.97, 7.86) of initiation before age 15, but not increased risk of cannabis initiation at an older age (OR = 0.96; 95% CI=0.62, 1.49).
