Only traumatic events that occurred before age 18 were included in the analysis, consistent with our objective to examine associations of parental AUDs with childhood events. Due to IRB concerns, one of the six data collection sites did not ask participants aged 12–17 about sexual assault; participants from that site who were still under the age of 18 at their most recent interview were coded as missing for sexual assault. Individuals who experienced their first trauma after the age of 18 (n = 589) were pooled with those who experienced no trauma into the “adult-only trauma/ trauma negative” group, based on bivariate tests that revealed no significant demographic or family history differences between the trauma-negative participants and post-18 trauma participants.
