Text

Among the 2640 youth and young adults who experienced trauma prior to age 18, 227 (8.6%) met criteria for a lifetime diagnosis of PTSD based on a traumatic event occurring in childhood. The results of a logistic regression shown in Table 4 (White youth and young adults) and Table 5 (African American youth and young adults) show a significant, positive association between female sex and PTSD. Among White youth, there was also a significant association between mother’s AUD and PTSD. Of the 227 White and Black individuals diagnosed with PTSD, physical and sexual assault were the two most frequently cited events precipitating the disorder. Thirty-five individuals (15.4%) who had been physically assaulted or held captive named that experience as their qualifying event for PTSD, and 46 individuals (20.3%) who experienced sexual assault named that experience as their qualifying event for PTSD.
