Genes were grouped based on molecular function and biological process. A mean recombination rate was calculated for each group. The significance of the result from each group was calculated via a permutation test involving 105 random groupings of genes. No correction was made for multiple testing. To account for the effect of G+C content on recombination, we performed a linear regression between the G+C content and recombination rate of all genes in each sample. Using the estimated regression parameters, the proportion of recombination explained by G+C content was subtracted from each gene.
