The effects on global 5mC and 5hmC DNA methylation during ethanol exposure and withdrawal were quantified using a DNA dot blot analysis. The binge condition showed no change in global expression levels. Chronic ethanol exposure conditions supported previous pyrosequencing results, where the levels of 5mC were increased while the withdrawal conditions reduced 5hmC levels. These findings suggest that ethanol treatment affects global DNA methylation levels at both 5mC and 5hmC marks, and that these marks are affected independently of one another.
