Text

We initiated a project with the Rhea database (https://www.rhea-db.org) to represent catalytic activities in GO. Rhea is an expert-curated resource of biochemical reactions designed for the annotation of enzymes and metabolic networks and models. Rhea uses ChEBI (13) to precisely describe each reaction's participants and their chemical structures (14). Rhea is also the reference vocabulary for enzyme annotation in UniProtKB (15). As of September 2020, 4196 GO terms have been cross-referenced to Rhea using a combination of manual and computational methods, providing 47% coverage of catalytic activities in the GO. Such cross-references to Rhea enhance the consistency and interoperability of our representation of catalytic activities and expand the amount of annotations provided by GO, as those cross-references directly result in GO annotations for UniProt entries associated with those Rhea classes.
