Further research is needed from epidemiological studies (to examine the relationship between the passage of medical marijuana laws and prevalence of opioid use) and from clinical trials (to investigate whether marijuana used to treat pain can allow patients to lower their opioid analgesic doses and maintain similar rates of analgesia).
