Likewise, the Akt/mTOR pathway is both directly and indirectly impacted by alcohol consumption via its direct inhibition of IRS1, and indirectly through modulation of metabolic function. It is for these reasons invariably complicated to study the interaction of AD and alcohol consumption on the mTOR/Akt pathway, but also imperative. The ability of multiple proteins in the mTOR/Akt pathway to directly affect the production of AB and hyperphosphorylation of Tau makes it a potential therapeutic target for early disease.
