Alcohol consumption stimulates the release of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) and activates the HPA axis (Clarke & Schumann, 2009). There is mixed evidence for an association between the corticotropin-releasing hormone receptor 1 gene (CRHR1) and alcohol-related phenotypes (Dahl et al., 2005; Treutlein et al., 2006).
