Text

Ratings of participants’ feelings of stimulation and sedation during the alcohol challenge portion of the study were obtained with the 14-item Biphasic Alcohol Effects Scale (BAES; Martin et al., 1993). This self-report questionnaire was administered at each measurement occasion along with the item querying subjective intoxication. The BAES is composed of a seven-item sedation subscale and a seven-item stimulation subscale. Subscale items correspond to different effects experienced during each state (e.g., down, sluggish vs. up, exited) rated on a 10-point scale. Respondents’ maximum rating of sedation and stimulation across all measurement occasions following alcohol administration (SedMax and StimMax, respectively) was used in the current analyses.
