The Internalized Shame Scale (ISS) is a highly reliable 24-item test that asks subjects to report how often they find themselves experiencing a variety of shame-related thoughts and feelings (Cook, 1989). For the original instrument, subjects rated each item on a 5-point scale ranging from 0 (never) to 4 (almost always). Due to a clerical error, the present study used a 7-point scale ranging from 1 (never) to 7 (always). Item scores were summed to achieve total scores ranging from 30 to 210.
