Children with T scores below 60 on both the internalizing and externalizing scales were considered controls (CONT), those with scores above 59 on just the internalizing scale were considered internalizers (INT), those with scores above 59 on only externalizing were considered externalizers (EXT), and those with scores above 59 on both the scales were considered co-occurring (CO). Construction of these groups, albeit not a perfect procedure (because a small difference in scores might result in designation in a different group), allowed comparison with other studies in which the CBCL was used and made it possible for us to examine children with pure versus co-occurring internalizing and externalizing symptoms.
