The HS-CC founders (formed from five laboratory and three wild-derived strains) provide substantially more genetic diversity than would be available in F2 intercrosses or HS animals formed solely from inbred laboratory mouse strains (Roberts et al., 2007). It is estimated that the HS-CC founder strains encompass >90% of Mus musculus genetic diversity (Churchill et al., 2004).
