The 20-item self-report Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS) (Beck and Steer 1993) has been shown to be a predictor of suicide attempts in adolescents. Sample items include: “I can’t imagine what my life would be like in 10 years” and “There’s no use in really trying to get anything I want because I probably won’t get it.” Internal consistency in this sample was .91.
