The fact that the majority of cholinergic, monoaminergic, and peptidergic neurons clustered together suggests a common underlying regulatory state distinct from that in neurons using canonical neurotransmitters. On the other hand, they still retained their CNS neuron character and did not intermingle with cholinergic or monoaminergic neurons of the PNS.
