Religiosity was measured using items originally derived from the National Comorbidity Survey, a Gallup poll, and the religiousness scale of Strayhorn and colleagues (Kendler et al., 1997b). The nine-item measure was subjected to an exploratory factor analysis with varimax rotation. We retained a single factor consisting of eight of the nine items (α = 0.87) from which factor scores were calculated and used in the subsequent analyses.
