Of the 30 BD associated loci, 8 also harbor associations 31,32,58 with schizophrenia (SCZ); however, conditional analyses suggest that the BD and SCZ associations at 3 of the 8 shared loci (in the NCAN, TRANK1 and chr7q22.3:105 Mb loci) may be independent (Supplementary Table 9). Differential BD and SCZ associations may represent opportunities to understand the genetic distinctions between these closely related and sometimes clinically difficult to distinguish disorders. We did not find BD loci that overlap with those associated with major depression33.
