disorders, suicide attempt, alcohol abuse, problems with illegal drug use, or criminal behavior (arrest, conviction, or detention). For exploratory analyses, a yes/no variable was created for each parent regarding a history of any of the three latter problems, regardless of impairment or treatment history. Cronbach’s alpha for FHS items Q1, Q2, and the binary variable defined by a “yes” to any of the specific problems (including parent criminality and drug/alcohol abuse) is 0.78 for fathers, and 0.73 for mothers (0.71 for mother and father items together).
