We used a novel variant of the delayed nonmatch-to-sample task. A midline-crossing saccade during the memory delay switched the hemifield of a remembered item. We found that WM traces are transferred from one prefrontal hemisphere to the other, that transferred traces recruit neural ensembles distinct from those induced by feedforward inputs, and that this transfer is facilitated by rhythmic coupling between the cerebral hemispheres.
