the 2001–2003 National Survey of American Life, a similar prevalence of lifetime DSM-IV alcohol and drug dependence combined was found in Black (4.9%, n = 3,570) and Caribbean Black (4.1%, n = 1,621) American adults54. In Native Americans, lifetime DSM-IV DUD was similar for Southwest (14.0% men, 5.4% women) and Northern Plains Indians (15.4% men, 10.9% women), with only Southwest females significantly lower than the other three groups46.
