Text

overall response to alcohol appears to represent an important component of inherited risk for AUDs, supporting the low level of response model (Heath et al., 1999; Schuckit and Smith, 1996, 2000; Trim et al., 2009). Adding further evidence, another study which examined the influence of a single SNP, rs279858, on subjective effects of alcohol (Pierucci-Lagha et al., 2005) described that participants homozygotes for the more common allele (comparable to our results with the T allele) reported greater stimulation following alcohol administration than the G-allele carriers (AD associated allele comparable to our results with the C allele) as measured by the BAES and Central Stimulation subscale of the Alcohol Sensation Scale. In this study, the authors interpreted that the decreased subjective response to alcohol of individuals carrying the minor allele, G, may in part mediate the increased risk for AD observed in population studies.
