(coping-depression) and drinking to cope with anxiety (coping-anxiety) suggests that coping-depression and coping-anxiety motives are differentially related to alcohol use and alcohol problems (see Grant, Stewart, O'Connor, Blackwell, & Conrod, 2007). However, it has yet to be documented how these more refined measures of drinking motives relate to personality, including facets of broad personality traits. Future research examining the relations between personality and AUDs (especially developmental relations) and potential mediators of this link would benefit from personality measures considered at the facet level as well as more refined measures of drinking motives.
